QUESTION OF THE MONTH @1MusicAve

What, if any, role do Mix Shows and Specialty Shows play for you and your Radio station?

DJs, clubs, festivals is where it all really starts. Best example was back in the day Dre (Andres Nieto, Diplo and Chill Program Director) mentioned to me that there’s this guy wearing a helmet named Marshmello that a lot of people are talking about. When I saw ‘Mello play “Alone” live, I knew right then and there that this wasn’t just a novelty act, that this DJ has great music. Later meeting him w/o the helmet I could tell that this guy has what it takes. Tiesto’s Club Life Radio on BPM on Friday Night is an important show for as his taste is impeccable. The Chainsmokers weekly show which also debuts on Friday is awesome discovery show for new music. We have a strong team that builds that show along with Alex and Drew and that starts with Rida Naser (BPM Program Director) We also have a new music show originally launched by Austin Kramer and now hosted by Liquid Todd called Beta BPM. It’s one full hour of brand-new dance music and it’s then available on the SiriusXM app on demand.

They’re super important; There’s so much respect for the DJ. They help showcase what’s currently happening in the culture. We’re always checking for insight with DJ sets and specials we broadcast.

They play a massive role for us. Dance music comes alive at festivals and night clubs, we wouldn’t be a dance music station if we didn’t provide that feeling of being out and having a good time. We work with some of the best of best DJs like Tiesto, The Chainsmokers, Gryffin, Aluna and many more. We are always bringing in new, upcoming, and buzzing talent as well. I love going out myself, and when I see a DJ who made me and my friends dance, look out for an Instagram DM because I’ll probably ask you to do a guest mix!

Mix shows and specialty shows are a great way to give our listeners a change from the songs they’re hearing all day, including some brand new and unreleased music. A lot of times, I’ll also hear songs in mix shows I wasn’t necessarily familiar with, and add them into rotation!

We do not air mix shows on PRIDE Radio, so not really a factor for us.

Since we have LGBTQ+ personalities on the air 24/7 every day of the week, we do not have mix shows or specialty shows.

A vital role. The Mix Show DJs keep our ears to the streets, while specialty shows allow us to experiment, both giving our listeners a unique experience.

We're different than most dance stations since we rely on community funding to pay the bills. Our mix shows and specialty shows allow us to address specific subgenres of dance music that might not get a lot of play otherwise. We've had a ton of success with a happy hardcore/hardstyle show, finding an audience that was underserved, then promoting the heck out of the time period.

We love to use both mix shows and our many specialty shows to showcase the variety of dance music that exists. From industrial to happy hardcore to trance, it’s great to have other outlets on c895 for songs or artists that don't necessarily fit during our daytime programming but still represent a vital part of dance music that our audience would and could enjoy.

Mix shows are an outlet to showcase songs we’re sitting on or banging.

It’s just another way to present the artists we believe in and support.

The Saturday Night Dance Party has been a staple with us for over a decade.  Longer if you go back to when we started it on HOT 97 back in 1986!!  :)
